Everyone needs a little inspiration now and again to start incorporating healthful practices into their daily lives, including holistic nutritionists like myself! I found some inspiration recently in the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. This documentary follows a gentleman who is quite overweight, has a debilitating autoimmune condition and takes some heavy steroid medications daily to manage his condition. His ailing health is in such decline he decides to finally take action.
His objective is to complete a 60-day juice cleanse juicing organic fruits and vegetables 4 times daily. His diet consists entirely of juice for 2 months. While this may seem extreme (and absolutely warrants the supervision of a health professional) he actually found his energy levels spiked and he entered into the best health of his life. Some of the benefits he enjoyed included substantial weight loss, about 80 pounds, clearer mental functioning, complete management of his autoimmune condition, and he stopped taking prescription medication all together.
Pretty amazing, huh! I won’t spoil the entire documentary, which I do urge you to check out but I’ll share a great way to incorporate juice into your life with a tasty recipe and its health benefits.
Juicing is an incredible way to get a huge dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants straight from mother earth. Juicing is an extremely easy way for your body to quickly absorb a significant amount of nutrients at once. Getting your vitamins and minerals from food is ideal; our bodies are designed that way. We ‘ve been eating food forever! Juicing is incredibly detoxifying for the liver, great for healing the digestive tract, and has incredible anti-cancer properties.
What Fruits and Vegetables Should I Juice?
All fruits and vegetables have beneficial properties for optimal health, so really all varieties are great options. I do recommend juicing mainly vegetables with only a small serving of fruit, as sugar levels can get quite high if juicing mostly fruit. I also strongly recommend juicing only organic vegetables as juicing conventionally grown vegetables concentrates the pesticides and other chemicals they’re sprayed with. This actually creates a burden on our liver, which has to detoxify these harmful chemicals and is a bit counter-intuitive to enhancing our health by juicing.
Who Should Juice?
Juicing is for everyone. If you have existing health conditions and take prescription medications daily I absolutely recommend speaking with a healthcare professional before starting to juice. While juicing can be very detoxifying it can present unwanted symptoms if there are many toxins stored in your body. Eliminating those toxins is extremely beneficial and once gone you can experience increased energy, improved sleep patterns and great digestion.
Juicing has also proven to be incredibly therapeutic for people that have undergone cancer treatments like chemotherapy. Juicing assists in removing residual toxins from highly hazardous medications involved in chemo regimes. Juicing also gives a huge dose of antioxidants that combat free radicals, and certain vegetables have been proven to exhibit great anti-cancer properties.
*Note: If you are a cancer patient and currently under-going treatments ALWAYS consult with your oncologist before juicing. The therapeutic levels of nutrients in juice may inhibit the efficacy of cancer drugs.
How do I Start Incorporating Juice into My Life?
First and foremost, you need a juicer to start juicing. I use a heavy-duty Breville Juice fountain duo and I LOVE it! I can juice any fruit and vegetable out there. Juicers can get quite expensive and Breville has a variety of juicers at various price points. A lower cost option is the Breville Juice fountain compact. Take a look here to find a suitable model for your budget. Of course, Breville is not the only brand to purchase it’s just the one I use. There are a lot of great juicers out there so it’s worth doing some research.
A great way to start juicing is by incorporating it into your diet a few times a week. You don’t have to go on a juice cleanse to reap the benefit of juicing. It’s great for you regardless of how little or how much you do it.
Anti- Cancer Juice Cocktail
- 1 large beet
- ½ small purple cabbage
- 1 cup carrots
- 1 bunch kale
- 2 apples
- 1-2 inch piece of ginger
- 1 squeezed lemon
Method of Preparation
Juice all ingredients minus the lemon. Squeeze the lemon juice in afterwards and stir. Yields 2 glasses of juice. Half the recipe if only making for one person.
