Coco Pomagrape Post Workout Drink

   

  

I have a confession to make. I’m not really a fan of  the taste of coconut water.  I am however a big fan of the post workout benefits of using coconut water. With that in mind I created this very flavourful and healthy post workout drink that replenishes electrolytes and helps muscles start recovering immediately. With the help of pomegranate powder and grapes the light coconut flavor is complemented and enhanced!

After a workout that combines strength and cardiovascular components a couple things happen in your body. Your muscle stores of carbohydrates (glycogen) are depleted, muscle fibres tear and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) are depleted.  This drink addresses all of these metabolic reactions and helps your body to immediately start recovering from a workout by doing the following…

Muscle recovery: After a workout your muscles are primed to receive quality proteins and start rebuilding themselves. The sugars found in the coconut water, grapes and pomegranate powder will be immediately utilized to replace lost carbohydrate stores in the muscles (not store as fat) and will also efficiently shuttle the plant based proteins into the muscles for recovery.

Replenish electrolytes: When our electrolytes have been depleted we may feel light-headed or experience mental fogginess. Electrolytes are essential for healthy brain function. This drink is a powerhouse in restoring electrolytes. Sodium will be replenished from the sea salt, but more importantly, a serious dose of potassium will be received. Potassium is found mainly in plant-based foods and is often lacking in the typical North American Diet. The coconut water alone has 600 mg of potassium (approx. two bananas worth) plus another 150mg or so from the grapes and pomegranate powder. Whenever I enjoy this post-workout drink I feel sharper and re-energized in large part thanks to the high dose of electrolytes.

Antioxidant support: Although exercise is so great for our health in many ways, but it also is a stressor on the body. With increased amounts of exercise there is an increased need for antioxidants. Navitas Naturals Pomegranate powder is rich in the potent antioxidant vitamin C as well as polyphenols that ward off free radical damage. The red grapes also contain a potent antioxidant resveratrol. This is the antioxidant that gives red wine and grape juice their healthful properties, especially for the cardiovascular system. Ingredients:

  • 300 mL coconut water
  • ½ cup frozen red grapes
  • 2 tbsp Navitas Natural Pomegranate Powder
  • pinch sea salt
  • 1 scoop vegan protein powder

method of preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix.
