Energy Jolt Smoothie

   

  

As of late I’ve been neglecting my morning smoothies in favour of my amazing cereal recipe. BUT I decided to bring back smoothies this week. The thing that I really love about having a smoothie in the morning is the fact that it breaks down all the foods and super foods enough that they are extremely easy to absorb and they immediately energize me! Out of all the health benefits that I receive from super foods energy boosting is my absolute favourite.

Several years ago when I was in university I was an absolute junkie for diet energy drinks. I was having about 1-2 per day just to have normal energy levels. My natural state ended up being one of fatigue and mood swings due to my blood sugar fluctuations and overstimulation from caffeine. I know, you wouldn’t expect that from a holistic nutritionist; but sometimes you have to experience the pitfalls of poor food/drink choices before you can make positive changes.

Nowadays I’m always looking for the best ways to have great energy in natural ways that promote health in my body! This smoothie recipe does just that…

There are two ingredients I want to make note of here that I really love (even though they’re all amazing!)

Bee Pollen Bee pollen is a potent energizer, immune enhancer and great for sexy times. It’s loaded with all essential amino acids making it a complete protein. It’s also rich in vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Bee pollen is an excellent antioxidant and contains high levels of zinc. Zinc is great for men’s health as it promotes prostate health and better sperm quality! What’s not to love?

Virgin Coconut Oil I want to distinguish virgin coconut oil from its counter part refined coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil has been minimally heated so that it maintains all of its nutritional properties. Refined coconut oil has lost much of its nutritional power. Virgin is of course more expensive so I reserve it for my smoothies, and I use refined for frying. Virgin coconut oil is a potent antimicrobial and antifungal substance, meaning that it will help your immune system fight off bad invaders (bacteria, viruses etc). It’s also a great energizer. The type of fat in coconut oil is immediately used as energy by the body rather than being stored as fat. In fact it actually increases your fat burning capabilities. Imagine that, fat burning fat!

Energy Jolt Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 small banana
  • 1 cup mixed berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1 teaspoon virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp bee pollen
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2-3 ice cubes

method of preparation:

Place all ingredients in your blender and mix! How simple ;)
