Joyous Health Book Review + Giveaway!


Today I want to share with you a book that is an essential for anyone that wants to live the healthiest life possible in a joyous fashion. As a former intern to the author Joy McCarthy and assistant in her acclaimed Eat Well Feel Well nutrition and yoga class I can tell you straight up that this woman lives and breathes Joyous Health.  Her passion for, and fresh approach to health and wellness is very infectious and inspires everyone she comes in contact with to start making healthful changes to their lives.


What is Joyous Health you ask? Joy describes it as the following:

Sounds pretty great doesn’t it? Well, this book empowers readers to lead a life just like this. Joy has shared her years of nutrition, health and wellness expertise in a straight-forward and fun guide to living joyously.

Within the pages of this book you will learn how to improve your digestion,  give your body the benefits of detoxification every single day make your kitchen a health promoting environment, all without the dieting.

To top off the goodness Joy has included 80 delicious that abide by her eating principles. And guess what? They are ALL extremely delicious.

Joy has been so gracious as to allow me to share one of my favourite recipes from her book that is my go-to energy packed snack. This is the perfect alternative to junky protein bars that are filled with many non-food substances, preservatives, fillers etc.

Joyous Health Chocolate Protein Squares


  • 3 cups raw oats (soaked for 2 hours to increase digestibility) or quick-cooking rolled outs (do not soak)
  • 1 cup chocolate plant – based protein powder
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips or raw cacao nibs
  • 1/2 chopped almonds, walnuts or pecans
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup almond butter
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 2 tbsp real maple syrup
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Method of Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Farenheit. Grease a 13 x 9 inch baking dish.

In a large bowl, combine oats, protein powder, sunflower seeds, coconut, chocolate chips, almonds, sugar and cinnamon; mix well.

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt almond butter and coconut oil. Add to dry ingredients; add almond milk, maple syrup and vanilla. Stir until fully combined. Give it a little taste test, adding more maple syrup if you desire a sweeter taste.

Pour batter into the baking dish and press it down evenly with wet hands. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Cut bars into your desired size and transfer them to a greased cookie sheet. Bake for another 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Let cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet. Serve immediately or transfer to a rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for a week or freeze for a few months.
